Shortlist of Fonts, Colours, Layout & Design Ideas

Potential Fonts:

Good Times - Wide and noticeable. Clear and easy to read. All capitals. Has a modern feel. Would represent modern pop music. Easy for young audience to read.

Lithos Pro - Noticeable, clear and easy. All capitals. Has a Greek style, representative of American university ‘frat house’ parties; similar to the image we were trying to put across in our video. The would continue the video theme across to the digipak to make it synergous. Has simplicity representative of pop genre and easy for young audience to read.

Chalkduster - Looks like chalk. Stands out. Has a child-like feel, endearing and nostalgic to teens, as well as being edgy and new. Different to most ‘normal’ fonts used on digipaks; our artist is ‘different’ to most pop artists of today. It represents the music. The album title ‘All We Know’ means things that we’ve learned along the years into teenage years, and many of the teenage audience would have had chalkboards in primary school and early years of secondary school that they would have learned things from. It is representative of the album name.

Potential Colours:

Red - Definitely a colour that needs to be used on the digipak as it’s always a colour I said would make the products synergous. The red cups are a big part of the video, and so they need to be part of the digipak too. It is also the colour of energy which represents the energy in our artist’s music. It is a very noticeable colour and brings images and text to the foreground which is good for a digipak. It is a colour that stimulates people into making quick decisions (the decision to buy the album) and is often seen on ‘buy now’ or ‘click here’ signs.

Pink - Traditionally goes well with red, it is like a lighter version of red. Also a colour that our target audience, teenage girls, love. It is also a traditionally ‘pop’ colour that has always featured on lots of digipaks from pop artists.

Purple - Goes nicely with pink and red, and is another colour that teenage girls love. It is an eye-catching colour, and symbolises power, independence and ambition. We are marketing our artist as a strong, powerful, independent, ambitious young woman who the audience aspire to be, she is also signed to an independent label. It is a colour that conveys dignity, and unlike many pop artists of today, our artist has dignity and does not get naked or wear provocative clothing.

Blue - Symbolises intelligence and confidence, which is what we are marketing our artist as. However, it is seen as a masculine colour and so maybe not what I’m completely looking for for the digipak.

Green - Bright green would be eye-catching and is a nice refreshing colour. Our artist is a new, ‘refreshing’ artist on the pop scene and so I think it would be a fitting colour. However, I’m not sure how well it’d go with the other colours I’m planning to use, and I’m not sure it’s achieve the overall look I’m going for.

Potential Layout

I could have a mid-shot picture of Eloise in the centre with the text at the top left corner. It is simplistic and lots of pop artists have similar layouts for their digipaks. It would make Eloise the centre of the digipak which is what is needed for a debut.

I think it would be a good idea to have Eloise’s face filling the whole front of the digipak, and have the text in the bottom right corner. It would draw attention to our artist, which is what we need for her debut, and looks neat and simplistic; representative of the pop genre. Our audience will aspire tone like our artist, so I feel like she needs to be the main part of the digipak, so that her image dominates her product, and it will give the audience an example of what they’re aspiring to.

I could have quite a close up photo of Eloise in the centre with the text on top of it at the centre-bottom. All the information/content is in one place and so the audience only has to glance at it quickly to see exactly what it is/who it is by. This would be perfect for our teenage audience as they get easily distracted and if everything is bunched together, there is nothing else to distract them. The simplicity of the layout is also representative of the pop genre, so the audience could identify that it is a pop album straight away.

Potential design ideas:

I could have lots of photos from the ‘party’ in the music video in the background. This would give the audience a lot to look at, which young girls would like, but that could also be a disadvantage as young people get easily distracted and if they saw it in a shop they could spend their time looking at all the photos instead of taking note of the artist’s name. They also will not know which person in the photos is the artist. However, it would make the digipak exciting and appealing to the teenage audience as teenagers love parties and could identify with lots of the things going on in the photos. It is not a typical ‘pop’ design, but our artist is not a typical pop artist so this could be nicely representative. Also, it would tie the music video into the digipak, and make it more synergous.

There needs to be red cups or even just a single red cup somewhere on the digipak. Red cups are something I have always said will be the motif to make the products synergous.

I could have an animated version of Eloise instead of an actual photo. This would make it interesting to look at and would appeal to our predominantly teenage audience. Again, it is not typical of pop digipaks, but our artist is not a typical pop artist.
