Mulvey's theory: The Male Gaze

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasuer in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly." (Laura Mulvey. 1992)

Mulvey's theory is essentially that any audience to watch a film/video is made to watch it in the eye of a hetrosexual male. The male gaze is seen throughout many genre's of music videos however it is especially seen in R&B music videos. The kinds of representations of women we may see in an R&B music video are women wearing minimal clothing. Also we will see the camera dismembering the women. This means that the camera will focus on to sections of her body, for example her legs.

50 Cent's 'Candy Shop' is an excellent example where Mulvey's theory is reinforced :
