Music Videos That Follow Andrew Goodwin's Main Ideas

Be By Myself – Asher Roth

This music video features a lot of repetition. Some of the shots are repeated quite a few times, for example, the synchronised dancing of Asher Roth and the women.
It has the easily recognisable feature of most rap videos: scantily clad women. The women are in tiny orange bikinis and presented as objects of male desire, just like most other videos in the rap genre.
The video tries to appeal to a wider audience by featuring Cee-Lo Green in it, who also features in the song, because Cee-Lo Green is a lot more well-known and commercial than Asher Roth, and so featuring him will attract his fans to the song and lead them to possibly start listening to/buying Asher Roth’s music. However, the video and song aren’t much different to any of Asher Roth’s other songs, therefore it still appeals to his original fanbase.

Va Va Voom – Nicki Minaj

This video features repetition of some shots, for example when Nicki Minaj is singing to the camera with the horse-structured outfit on.
This song doesn’t fade out or gradually end, it comes to a very abrupt end and you cannot even tell beforehand that it is going to end. The video reflects this; the story doesn’t come to a gradual end where the princess falls in love with the prince and they live happily-ever-after, it ends very quickly with the evil stepmother with no indication of what was going to happen next.
It has the easily recognisable feature shared with most rap videos: Nicki isn’t wearing very much clothing in most of the scenes.

About a Girl – The Summer Set

This music video features repetition in quite an interesting way. Rather than repeating shots or scenes, it repeats The Summer Set’s ‘sadface’ logo. The sadface logo features in almost every shot in the video, in different locations all across New York City.
The song comes to quite an abrupt end; it doesn’t slow down towards the end or give any indication that it is going to end. This is reflected in the video. Nothing significant happens between the couple that gives a clue to an ending, it just stays relatively the same the whole way through the video, right up until it ends.
The video has a feature easily recognisable to fans of the band: the sadface logo.
The way the video features the logo so heavily, and is centred around it gives it an appeal to a wider audience because they may see the video for the first time, having never heard of the band and wonder what the logo means. This could lead them to find out about the band out of curiosity, and they could end up liking the band and buying their music/merchandise.
